The Truth About Curls (That No One Really Talks About)

There’s something I really want every curly person to hear:

There is no such thing as perfect curls.

Some curls are loose. Some are tight. Some days they behave beautifully, and other days they absolutely don’t — and none of that means you’re doing anything wrong.

One of the biggest myths around curly hair is that all curls should look the same. Defined. Uniform. Predictable. But real curls don’t work like that. Most people have multiple curl patterns, different textures, and varying porosity all on one head of hair. That means one section might coil easily, another might wave, and another might feel like it’s doing its own thing entirely.

And that’s normal.

Not everyone’s curls will be super defined — and definition isn’t the measure of healthy hair. Healthy curls are curls that are cared for, respected, and supported, not forced into a shape they’re not meant to hold.

It’s also completely normal to have sections that aren’t curly at all. The hair around the crown, the nape, or the front can behave very differently, especially if there’s been past heat, stress, hormonal changes, or natural variation in the hair follicle. Curly hair is dynamic — it changes with life, with seasons, and with how we care for it.

What does make a difference is learning what your curls need to thrive.

With the right care — hydration, gentle handling, scalp support, and realistic expectations — curls soften, strengthen, and show up in the best version of themselves. Not perfect. Not uniform. But yours.

There is so much beauty in imperfection. In texture. In movement. In curls that don’t match but somehow still belong together.

Loving your curls isn’t about controlling them — it’s about working with what they naturally want to do and supporting them along the way.

Your curls don’t need fixing.
They need understanding
